wywiad z Samem z jakiegoś serbskiego medium, wszelkie błędy wynikają z translatora google.
In 2010. The Interpol has embarked on a tour to promiviše new, fourth album (also known as Interpol), and B92 had the opportunity to meet with the drummer and band spokesman Sam Fogarino, which is an extremely straightforward and appealing way of discussing the band's career, the world music scene And in other media, modern culture and a group of girls ...
When, shortly after the Strokes, emerged as the standard-bearers of modern rock, Interpol had been a powerful addition to the world music scene. In the past eight years, the New York trio (quartet recently) thrilled the whole planet with a dark and heavy, but seductive and bizarrely catchy songs, many of which have become symbols revived guitar scene, far more potent than ever.
Although since its debut album Turn on the Bright Lights, widely perceived as one of the best decade, have become popular, and therefore attractive to the public about this little known band. Besides the fact that highly eloquent, attractive to women because of her looks, and men due to the refined style of dress, life philosophy and thinking of the band members are still largely unknown.
B92: What is your attitude towards interviews? In his last interview with Nylon, Jesse Eisenberg from Social Network said that despises all this, because he believes that the interviews were a way to raise public figures themselves ego ...
I Fogarino: I do not watch the interviews so. For me it is a normal way to convey some message to people who are interested in our work. I do not know all the world that the film came out on Facebook, as not everyone knows that even the Interpol's new album finished and we're on tour. Thus they can read what we said and what will attract the band. Theoretically, I think that interviews are an excellent tool for communication, but what you do not like, and what is increasingly happening in the U.S., is the attempt of journalists to look at each statement from a certain angle. They like that I can not wait to you get the words out of context and create their own vision of the event. It frightens me, because I'm quite an extrovert and I do not want to create a persona and pretend to be someone else just to protect myself during an interview. The interview should be a personal verbal exchange between the observer and storyteller, which explains who, what, when, how and where. I do not even I knew how to create an alter-ego just to survive fucking interview. Therefore, when I read something about yourself that is completely taken out of context, it made me really frustrated. The point is that in many cases journalism today directly goes against the word from which it originated, "Journal". Instead of receiving the document and a time stamp and one's real position, you serve pure fiction and fabrication. "
You're in a very popular band that has for years been at the top of the international music scene. What is because your relationship with the media in general? Do you Ježíš for fame, do you this is interesting, do you feed the ego?
This flirtation with the media when you're a public figure should be ignored, because the essence of communication through media outreach to audiences and fans of the band, not a personal promotion. Of course, the trap is that everyone keeps to themselves and their work has to follow it and see what kind of message out in public, intentionally or unintentionally. At the same time you must keep a distance, but also be aware of everything. It is not easy. In an attempt to preserve its own integrity when working with the media want to be honest and show what I am and what I believe, but when you constantly see how deliberately misinterpreted than your words, it's really big, big blow. Because the media terrifies me. They have the power to show the truth in their own way, whether it comes to culture, or politics or whatever. They eat some strange needs of the public and what is now considered all the news is particularly shocking.
Interpol many consider the very dark band, but you are all very happy person, smiling and likeable, complete contrast to the music we represent. How do you get all this? How to create a balance?
Music is the only facet of our personality. This ability to create a "different atmosphere" is what we were and merged. I hope it does not sound too pretentious. Our career is only part of us. I do not believe in the idea of "wearing" music and that attitude with him everywhere, because our songs are not always the reality, not a part of us 24 hours a day. Our songs are just part of us and something we love to do and therefore are a great way to express emotions that may not be exactly appropriate for the public. Of course, we are quite different than our often difficult songs, but every man has many sides and so we're not dull, as people often think. On the contrary, everyone in the band have a great sense of humor, it's sometimes even absurd. In any case, this is an interesting contrast.
How do people react when you meet? Do you prefer to meet people, or is it tired?
I really love to meet people, especially fans of the band. It's a nice feeling to shake hands with someone who respects you and who you, as a last resort, given their salary. The problem is that many fans, especially younger, we tend to observe a one-dimensional as the characters of our songs. Sometimes when you are aware of their existence in public, you wonder how people who are familiar with your work to respond to you, whether you will be disappointed when they introduce the "right person", instead of the romanticized idea of the persona they have in their mental theater. Therefore, I am pleased to see that most often are pleasantly surprised when we meet, rather than be disappointed that we are not some fictitious character from a comic strip. I have never happened to anyone surprised to see that I'm smiling and I am a positive person. People always react positively to kindness and it has nothing to do with whether you are a public figure. For us, signing autographs, taking pictures and chatting with fans really pleased and I believe that many people can confirm.
Interpol has a very diverse audience ...
It thrills me. On one occasion we played at Rock Werchter in Belgium and it was the first time that we played on the main stage, and before she played Metallica. We thought it would be in the audience just Metallica fans who will be interested to hear bands such as Interpol. As I was only then cheated! First is our show with the stage watching the guys from Mastodon, that we approached Kirk Hammett after the concert to meet with us. That day I mean a lot, because we demonstrated that genres are not too important, and that most of the audience does not identify that way. I am glad that we managed to overcome the label and bring together different people. In New York, for example, a large number hiphopera love Interpol! In the end I even worked with rapper Beans. He played in a band Antipop Consortium, which was very good and made a variety of music.
What is something most bizarre that I was a fan ever said or edited?
I will never forget the situation after a concert, it was in a strange place, say, Virginia. I walked towards the bus, where I waited a few fans. I stopped to talk with them and there was a girl, quite drunk, who approached me and said, "You want sex?" I told her that I will not and I'm married, to which she replied to me: "Well, in that case, you want sex with a condom? "(Laughter) I immediately thought," Yeah, great, now saying that it can and a condom, then it is the ideal option "(laughter).
Speaking of that, you have the real groupies? Do you girls so constantly approached and offered a lot?
I was married a few years ago and now I became a father, and that sort of thing very, very quickly lose their charm and become dull. When we first became popular, everything was available. It is true that I was entertained for some time that way and use it, but I quickly realized how fucking empty, shallow and worthless way of life. From that period when I went out and hast not brought anything useful with it. It has no memories that are dear to me, everything has faded. This way of life is not real, it's just a shallow exercise in the moment that you learn nothing. Ultimately, it's not quite as special privileges, any band that is popular has groupies who do not care where you have a band. The sex, drugs, alcohol, the girls offered to us, they would also give the Kings of Leon (laughs).
How does your life off stage? Now that you're married, things have certainly changed, but when you're in New York, is going out with other famous people, etc.?
Not really. Otherwise do not go out too. Media attention which in itself is meaningless. Sometimes, if I go out with some famous friends, the paparazzi take pictures of us, and that's it. We laugh, we turn to continue talking about something else. For most of my friends musicians would never have guessed that in a rock band, these people are not stars like them displayed in the NME-ju, for example. Performance is a job like any other, and the paparazzi pictures do not show anything, they are far from reality. After all, they're more popular, the more try harder to be normal. And it's hard. Now do not look at things casually as a decade ago. When I go home, I know that I was leaving my family, and even if you do not have family, you are missing your friends, the daily routine you something.
So the lifestyle of famous musicians has nothing to do with what we read in the newspapers?
Not at all. All these romantic stories in newspapers are fantasy. All known that I have no points of contact with these stories. When you're in a band, it's a job full time. Traveling in the van each day from country to country, you worry whether the equipment will arrive in the area for a gig on time, will you be able to get ready for the concert ... Honestly, sometimes we stay hungry because we have no time to eat. These stories, about how musicians every night looking for girls for sex and tons of drugs, it has nothing to do with my life. Just think, for nobody no time. We usually leave the country just a few hours after the concert and traveling all day, for months. In fact, if someone wants to lop the drugs and is much easier to live a stable life in one place (laughter).
It is interesting that on your personal lives and life philosophies, knows very little, although it is a great band Interpol. Of course, this is because the media seeking sensationalism, and you are acting as a stable and normal person. Are you worried that the people at the end of interesting Lindsey Lohan, and not you, but only because it "makes nonsense" and not talk about literature, for example?
It's sad, because I think that someone like me has much more to offer the world. These things are written by the tabloids, it's no longer news. Just because someone is determined to keep swinging life that leads to a totally stumbling is not something that anyone should be interested. It is actually very sad, and the media love most of those stories that make a splash, followed by all public figures collectively are blackened. It's all crap. When I see such stories, I turn my head and run away. It is currently undertaking to find a credible source of Contact. When I started listening to music as a kid, I knew the abundance of excellent magazines were my source of everything. Now that there is almost no more, which is disheartening, but when we can not change that, we need at least to isolate them.
What do you personally listen to the music? In general, what artists have you as a band of interest? Does your music reflect your taste, or more personal introspection that has nothing to do with some special influence?
All three come from very different backgrounds and tastes, we are only partly overlap. When we were in the studio, everyone has different ideas, because we ourselves are quite different. Paul, for example, loves hiphop, Daniel is a "scrapbook" and I never sure where the climate of a given moment, and I, say, listening to a lot of heavy guitar music. There is one label that I love very, Southern Lord, and now only listen to bands that record for them, and they are all very heavy. Anyway, my favorite band The Melvins, and when you hear Interpol, you would never think that we need such bands influence. It is important to me something I like to inspire myself things, not to copy what somebody else has done. When I see something that someone does well, it motivates me to also try to make something good. The bottom line is, do not even know how to copy and when I tried to "take off" rhythms of their favorite bands as a little, I succeeded. But it would come to a new rhythm and created something of their own, which was my greatest reward.
What are your impressions of the popular scene today? That the kids, for example, saw the Lady Gaga?
All this is my amazingly, but who am I to talk? It seems to me that, as much garbage on the pop scene, the better underground music that comes from rebellion to it. I grew up listening to punk rock and I am sad that no longer exist, because such scenes produced many interesting personalities and bands. Now just hope that this terrible mainstream pop to create a better alternative scene. Depresses me that the times when people truly interested in music when we went to the store of records or CDs, and have seen millions of new bands that we had to inquire and learn. Now everything is so accessible, which at some level is not bad, because everyone can find you on internet and thus resolve the matter, read interviews and even buy a CD or concert tickets. On the other hand, it disturbs me, because I know how many of my friends are struggling just to survive in the music industry, as a small publishing house and affirmed bands fail, as long as you eat the big publishers. "
One cliché question: How does a member of the popular band? Is there an essential component of fear, when you are afraid that the fans or the critics will not like the new album? This public attention as much influence on what you do?
It is very difficult, but we never make compromises. To be afraid of people's reactions to what we do, I think that we would never have even become musicians. If we are excited about our work, it is by far the most important. All proceeds from the idea that first you have to be satisfied with his work, and then the others. It is a conviction, the power of suggestion, belief in the idea of creating new things. The audience reacts to it. People often think they are conformists, but that's not true, and enjoy the new, uncompromising stuff. That's why we like to offer his vision, which is often changing. As for the cooperation within the band is concerned, it was fucking heavy process (laughs). We all have egos and crazy, but the result is what matters. When finally, after all the troubles, we finish a song, forgetting all the discussions that preceded and only we are proud. And that we need.
You are the best friends? Has your relationship changed over time for better or worse because you are constantly together, and still work?
We no longer even not friends, we are literally brothers. And yes, we go through various stages. We often have situations where an argue and then disappear for a week. But always we return to each other. These are my brothers, I told them I have to go back and solve everything. Families can not shake off, you can try, but it does not work. For us, it really can not say that we are best friends, because we are constantly together, and for ten years. Many have passed along and unreal are close, so no quarrel can not be got in our relations. Simply, we care for each other to such an extent that there is no debate over which we could not move.
Paulo's lyrics are very dark and often reveal information and thoughts that most people would not saopštavali public, your music is also monitored. To what extent is the Interpol really a reflection of your character, how it was only a question of professionalism and dedication to a fictional idea?
This line has long faded, and that's the definition of professionalism, not his personality izdvajaš of work, but to give my best. I think it makes a sincere and genuine atmosphere. Does Paul writes autobiographical, or from the perspective of a passive observer, it does not matter. He believes in any case in what it says, it's something that interested him, even if you do not write about it. It is a matter of integrity, and it is very important to us, even I can not imagine Interpol without it. As far as the texts themselves, I know that there is some truth in what he says, and some stories only observation of the environment, but it's not the point. The point is that everything we do honestly, to the last shot with a baton.
Why have not so far come to Serbia? Do you call anybody at all?
Recently we try to make a tour of Eastern Europe, we've never played there. The other day we played in Berlin and we heard that hundreds of people arrived from Poland to see us. After playing in Western Europe, but the last eight years, we really need a new experience, exploring new territories. I think we will definitely come again, but the question is when. I know I'll be on the whole European tour next year, but we have nothing to do with the performances of our management agreement. It is certain that we have a great desire to come, not only because of the concert, but because it is nice to travel to new countries.
i chyba w Dublinie 'ktoś' mu mówił, że przyjechał aż z Polski ?
